Biography

George Borup was a graduate of Yale University (1907) and was working for the Pennsylvania Railroad when Robert E. Peary hired him as an assistant on the 1908-09 North Pole expedition. He published his own account of his experiences in 1911, "A Tenderfoot with Peary." Following his return from the north he began graduate studies in geology at Yale. He was appointed assistant curator of geology at the American Museum of Natural History and while there, with Donald MacMillan began planning for a major Arctic expedition to explore the Arctic Ocean northwest of Ellesmere Island and determine whether there was land there. Peary had seen land in that direction and called it Crocker Land. Oceanographers had also hypothesized that such a landmass existed. Borup died in a tragic boating accident only two months before the expedition was to depart. An obituary can be read here http://www.jstor.org/stable/199892?seq=1
