Biography

Adolphus Washington Greely was a U.S. general and commander of the Lady Franklin Bay expedition.  He also attempted to reach the North Pole in 1882.  This expedition was a disaster and he and his crew were not rescued until 1884.  Albert Operti, a painter, was so moved that he painted what he imagined their days to be like while waiting to be  rescued.  Greely was also the director of the U.S. Weather Service and the U. S. Army's Signal Officer.  He  wrote several books including:  Handbook of Polar Discoveries (1896), True Tales of Arctic Heroism in the New World (1912), and Three Years of Arctic Service (1886).
