Biography

Koodlookto (modern spelling, Qilluttoq), an Inughuit man, worked for Robert E. Peary on the North Pole expedition. He was one of three Inughuit men with Ross Marvin on the sea ice returning to land when Marvin died. Many years later he confessed to having killed Marvin, who had threatened to leave one of other men, who had become ill, behind. In the spring of 1909 Koodlookto accompanied Donald MacMillan and George Borup on a sledge trip to Cape Morris Jessup, the northernmost tip of Greenland, where they were spent a month recording tides. He and MacMillan subsequently spent a few weeks at Fort Conger, on Ellesmere Island, also recording tides. He seems to have occasionally been asked to take photographs as well.
