Biography
Albert Jasper Operti was an artist who specialized in Arctic scenes. He was born in Italy, trained in the United Kingdom, and worked in the United States.
Operti travels to the Arctic on two of Robert E. Peary’s expeditions, in the summers of 1896 and 1897. In his role as artist he made many sketches, and also, on behalf of the American Museum of Natural History, a series of plaster casts of Inughuit men and women.
Operti drew on his northern experience for oil paintings of Arctic scenes, including many documenting important historical events. He produced a series of portraits of Arctic explorers, including Peary and Matthew Henson, which were issued as collectible cards by the Hassan Tobacco Co, as well as some that were issued as post cards.
In addition to his Arctic work Operti painted backdrops for the Metropolitan Opera and paintings for dioramas in the American Museum of Natural History. He died in his apartment at the Explorers Club in New York, in 1927.
Most of his sketchbooks are in the Explorers' Club Collection as are many paintings. HIs papers from 1896-1926 are archived at Dartmouth University.
