The compass has a hinged cover and is attached to a leather neck cord. MacMillan wrote about the challenge of using a compass in the far north, "It was our custom to place the compass in the snow, well away from any local attraction such as metal on the sledges... and sight due north, allowing for a westerly variation of the compass of 112 degrees."
