Peary used this rifle in the north. Manufactured by the Winchester Repeating Arms Co., New Haven, Connecticut, it is a model 1892, patented Oct. 14, 1884. Along with southern explorers, Inughuit men had guns in their tool kits, beginning in the 1800s when whalers and explorers traded muzzle-loading weapons for furs and ivories.
