The Sunday illustrated supplement of the Paris newspaper Le Petit Journal, for September 19, 1909, shows Robert E. Peary and Frederick Cook battling at the North Pole, observed by penguins: "The Conquest of the North Pole / Dr. Cook and Commander Peary argue over glory." The accompanying article describes their competing claims, along with a poem about the events. The debate was nationalist as well as intense.
