MacMillan first met Shushepish (Joe Rich) in 1910 when he was a boy. They met again in 1927, when Shushepish worked as an interpreter for MacMillan, and an informant for anthropologist William Duncan Strong. His wife, Akat (Agathe Rich) also worked with Strong.
