Caribou skin liners fit inside waterproof sealskin boots to keep the feet warm and dry. Nonetheless, frostbite was a frequent problem. Donald MacMillan, who wore these liners with his sealskin boots, was ordered back to the ship because of severe frostbite during the 1908-1909 North Pole expedition.
