Sledge drivers controls their dogs from the back of the sledge using a very long whip. The goal is not to hit the dogs, but aim above or beside them. Dogs respond to the sound and brush of air, as well as to verbal commandsThis example has a tapered wood handle with two thicknesses of hide ending with a knotted piece of twine. This whip is said to have been used on Peary's North Pole expedition.
