Dogs were an integral part of the plan to reach the North Pole. Eight dogs pulled a sledge, and were fed one pound of pemmican each per day. As teams turned back, they took the weaker dogs with them, leaving the stronger ones to go on. Pemmican was dried and finely ground lean beef mixed with suet, raisins and a little sugar.
