Made at Nelson Island School of Design. The school was established in 1970 to help revive the custom, 2300 years old, of using native clay to make seal oil lamps and cooking utensils. The shape has evolved from some old berry baskets and cooking pits found along the Bering Sea coast. The clay was obtained along the coast of Nelson Island close to the village of Toksook Bay. The reddish glaze contains calcined walrus bones. The ivory seals were carved by one of the men from Toksook Bay Village.
