From MacMillan's journal: "Tonight I have been to Port Foulke to visit Sontagg's [sic] grave. I blackened the letters of the head stone and photographed the grave at various angles.
I have never experienced such a feeling of utter lonliness as came over me today when standing beside that grave. A chaotic pile of rocks, a broken head stone, two thousand miles from home, the silence broken only by the babbling of a small brook the grave unkept, uncared for, unhonored. No promising young lad to read the inscription on the head stone, and be inspired to nobler things, On two American Expeditions he served, and served faithfully. Young and enthusiastic he gave up his life for knowledge." (Journal April 1916 - 1917)
