1908-09 North Pole Expedition, Sextants
scientific equipment
A sextant or octant is used to calculate latitude by measuring the angle of the sun at its highest point down to the horizon and performing calculations. While this instrument has long been associated with Peary's final North Pole expedition, the company was in business in London under the name Spencer, Browning and Rust from 1786-1840 and the octant likely dates before 1840.
