Robert E. Peary's final naval rank of Rear Admiral is signaled by signified by the gold stripes at bottom of sleeves on this tails-style dress jacket. Nine pairs of gold-toned brass buttons fasten the front; two buttons hold the epaulets and two at the back waist. Gold braid decorates the stand-up collar and cuffs.
Peary was promoted to Rear Admiral by the U.S. Navy on March 3, 1911. His name and his exploration accomplishments were known around the world. In retirement, he turned his attention to other matters; he developed an interest in flying and was an early advocate for miitary aviation.
